The CRDHA, as authorized by the Health Professions Act, is responsible for setting the standards of practice, including entry-to-practice requirements, in order to ensure the safe, ethical and competent practice of the dental hygiene profession in Alberta.

There are different processes, fees and requirements for becoming registered to practice in Alberta depending upon your circumstances and if you are:

  1. A new graduate from the Dental Hygiene Program at the University of Alberta and NOT on CRDHA's Student Register
  2. A new graduate from an accredited dental hygiene program in Canada (CDAC) or the United States (CODA)
  3. A new graduate from an international dental hygiene program
  4. A registered dental hygienist from another jurisdiction in Canada
  5. A registered dental hygienist from another jurisdiction seeking registration on the CRDHA Courtesy Register for a specific purpose
  6. An internationally trained dental hygiene applicant seeking to be placed on the CRDHA General Register
Note: Internationally trained dentists cannot be authorized to work as dental hygienists in Alberta unless they have completed a dental hygiene program.

An applicant from a dental hygiene program that has been determined to be "not substantially equivalent" to the College's benchmark, the Dental Hygiene Program at the University of Alberta, will be required to successfully complete the Canadian Performance Exam in Dental Hygiene (CPEDH).
