Health Professions Act
The Health Professions Act directs the activities of the CRDHA and outlines the regulatory responsibilities that are set in place to protect and serve the public. The primary regulatory responsibilities of the CRDHA relate to:
- Registering dental hygienists who are qualified to practice in Alberta.
- Establishing, maintaining, and enforcing standards of practice for dental hygienists in Alberta.
- Establishing, maintaining, and enforcing standards for continuing competence in the practice of dental hygiene in Alberta.
- Implementing a process to address complaints by the public about the practice of dental hygienists in Alberta.
The unique aspects of the practice of dental hygienists are identified in Schedule 5 of the HPA. Schedule 5 includes the practice statement and protected titles of the profession. The titles "dental hygienist", "registered dental hygienist", and any abbreviations or initials are protected under the HPA.
